SIMUNJAN – A large-scale tree planting initiative was carried out at the Sabal Forest Reserve on Thursday, bringing together Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB), the Sarawak Forest Department (JHS), and members of the local community.
The programme, organised under SEB’s Corporate Level Integrated 10-Year Tree Planting, Protection and Habitat Restoration Campaign 2021–2030, saw the participation of 170 individuals.
Among them were SEB employees from the Health, Safety, Security & Environment (HSSE), SEB Power, and Strategy & Corporate Development divisions, alongside JHS staff and local residents.
A total of 2,500 saplings of native tree species were planted during the event. These included meranti, kapur, selangan, keruing, and engkabang, all of which are vital to Sarawak’s forest ecosystem.
The planting of indigenous species is intended to restore natural habitats, strengthen biodiversity, and support long-term forest sustainability.
This marks the third collaborative effort between SEB and JHS at Sabal Forest Reserve in 2026, reinforcing their shared commitment to environmental stewardship.
The initiative also aligns with the Greening Sarawak Campaign, a state-wide effort to increase forest cover and promote ecological balance.
SEB’s Senior Vice President for HSSE, Tuan Alvin Lim, attended the programme, highlighting the company’s dedication to integrating sustainability into its operations.
Representing JHS was Tuan Hj Biha Bin Razali, Senior Research Officer from the Restoration and Industrial Forest Division, who underscored the importance of community involvement in conservation projects.
Tree planting campaigns such as this are seen as crucial in addressing climate change, reducing carbon emissions, and ensuring that future generations inherit a healthier environment.
By involving corporate staff, government agencies, and local communities, the programme fosters a sense of shared responsibility for Sarawak’s natural heritage.
The Sabal Forest Reserve, located in Simunjan, has long been recognised as a key site for conservation activities.
With its diverse flora and fauna, the reserve provides an ideal setting for restoration projects aimed at balancing development with environmental protection.
As Sarawak continues to expand its infrastructure and energy projects, initiatives like SEB’s tree planting campaign serve as reminders of the need to safeguard the state’s forests.
The collaboration between SEB and JHS demonstrates how corporate and government partnerships can deliver meaningful contributions to sustainability goals.
