SIBU – The Sarawak Road Transport Department (JPJ) has stepped up enforcement in Sibu through a Motorcycle Special Ops, targeting compliance with road laws during the festive season and school holidays.
The operation, carried out by the JPJ Sibu Operations Unit, included patrols around the town centre and static monitoring along Jalan Lanang.
The initiative forms part of the broader Ops Hari Raya Aidiladha and Gawai Day 2026 campaign, which aims to reduce accident risks and ensure safer travel across Sarawak.
With traffic volumes expected to rise during the celebrations, JPJ has prioritised motorcycle safety, given the vulnerability of riders in road incidents. Throughout the operation, enforcement officers inspected 278 vehicles of various categories.
The checks revealed several offences, including driving without a valid licence, expired motor vehicle licences (LKM), lack of insurance coverage, and registration numbers not meeting specifications. Other violations involved technical aspects of vehicle safety.
JPJ confirmed that enforcement action was taken against all detected offences in accordance with current road laws.
The department stressed that such measures are necessary to uphold safety standards and protect road users during peak travel periods.
Motorcycles remain one of the most common modes of transport in Sarawak, particularly in urban centres such as Sibu. However, they are also among the most exposed to accidents.
JPJ’s focus on motorcycles during this operation reflects ongoing concerns about rider safety and the need for stricter compliance with regulations.
Authorities highlighted that enforcement is not only about penalising offenders but also about raising awareness among motorists.
By conducting visible patrols and static checks, JPJ aims to remind road users of their responsibilities and encourage safer driving practices.
The department reiterated its commitment to intensifying enforcement operations from time to time, especially during festive seasons when accident rates tend to increase.
JPJ Sarawak has urged all road users to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, documentation is up to date, and driving behaviour remains cautious and tolerant.
As the festive season continues, JPJ’s Motorcycle Special Ops in Sibu serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety and the collective responsibility of all motorists to reduce risks on the road.
