Sarawak Introduces Free Higher Education Through Economic Strength

KUCHING – Sarawak has become the first state in Malaysia to provide free higher education at state-owned institutions, a move Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg emphasised was not tied to election pledges but made possible by the state’s robust economic performance.

Speaking at the Sarawak Career and Training Fair (SCaT Fair) 2026 at the Hikmah Exchange Event Centre, the Premier explained that the policy was introduced after Sarawak strengthened its fiscal position and expanded its revenue base.

He said the government’s priority was to reinvest this success into human capital development, ensuring that Sarawakians benefit directly from the state’s economic growth.

“I have no promises. In our previous election manifesto, there was no mention of free higher education. But when we can strengthen our economy and our fiscal situation is strong, I will give back to the people directly to the university with free education for Sarawakians,” he said.

The Premier stressed that the initiative is designed to provide equal opportunities for all Sarawakians, regardless of family background or financial circumstances.

He highlighted that the policy would allow students from diverse communities, including Dayak, Chinese, Malay, Melanau, Bidayuh, Orang Ulu and Penan, to pursue higher education without financial barriers.

Abang Johari explained that the government’s long-term strategy is to nurture talent capable of driving Sarawak’s economic transformation.

He pointed to key sectors such as technology, renewable energy, artificial intelligence, aerospace and other high-value industries as areas where skilled graduates will be essential.

He underlined that free higher education should not be viewed merely as a welfare measure but as a strategic investment in Sarawak’s future competitiveness.

“When our economy grows and the state’s financial position strengthens, then the benefits must be felt by the people. That is why we invest in education because talent and knowledge are the most important assets for the future of Sarawak,” he said.

The policy, which came into effect this year, positions Sarawak as a pioneer in Malaysia by offering comprehensive funding for higher education in state-owned universities.

This development is expected to produce a new generation of highly skilled graduates who can meet the demands of the evolving economy.

Observers note that the move reflects Sarawak’s broader vision of ensuring that economic prosperity is shared with its citizens.

By prioritising education, the state government aims to secure long-term growth and resilience while reducing reliance on external talent.

The introduction of free higher education is widely seen as a landmark decision that will reshape Sarawak’s education landscape, offering opportunities to thousands of young people and reinforcing the state’s commitment to inclusive development.
