Kedah Immigration Arrests 29 in Series of Enforcement Operations

SUNGAI PETANI – The Kedah State Immigration Department has intensified its enforcement drive with a series of operations targeting illegal foreign immigrants (PATI), culminating in a major raid at a prominent night market in Sungai Petani on 15 July 2026.

The operations, conducted under Ops Kutip, Ops Sapu, and Ops Gegar, involved 19 officers from the Immigration Action Unit and the Enforcement Division of Kedah State Immigration. The team focused on areas suspected of employing or harbouring undocumented migrants, with inspections carried out across four premises in Kuala Muda and Kota Setar districts.

Beginning at 4.00 pm and continuing until completion, officers inspected 124 individuals, comprising 81 Malaysian citizens and 43 foreigners. Of these, 29 illegal immigrants were arrested, including 19 men and 10 women aged between 20 and 50 years.

Those detained included eight Bangladeshi men, ten Vietnamese nationals (seven men and three women), four Myanmar citizens (three men and one woman), six Thai nationals (one man and five women), and one Laotian woman. All are suspected of committing offences under the Immigration Act 1959/63.

During the raid at the Sungai Petani night market, several local employers and touts attempted to warn foreign workers to flee upon spotting enforcement officers. However, swift action and a coordinated cordon by the Immigration team prevented escape, leading to the arrest of all individuals believed to have violated immigration laws.

To support investigations, officers issued ten Imm.29 forms (Summons to Witnesses). The arrested foreigners were subsequently transferred to the Belantik Immigration Depot for further legal action in accordance with existing provisions.

The Immigration Department has issued a stern warning to employers and residents against conspiring to employ, protect, or assist illegal immigrants. Officials stressed that such acts constitute serious offences under the Immigration Act 1959/63 and will be met with strict enforcement without compromise.

Authorities emphasised that enforcement operations will continue to be intensified in key locations across Kedah. The department’s strategy aims to combat the influx of undocumented migrants, curb illegal employment, and uphold Malaysia’s immigration laws.

Community cooperation remains vital in supporting enforcement. The department urged the public to report suspicious activities and avoid involvement in illegal employment practices. By working together, authorities and residents can help safeguard national security and maintain public order.

Observers note that Kedah’s proactive enforcement reflects Malaysia’s broader national commitment to addressing immigration challenges. With its strategic location and bustling economic activity, Sungai Petani has become a focal point for monitoring irregular migration, making consistent enforcement essential.

The latest operations demonstrate the Immigration Department’s determination to act decisively against offenders. By targeting hot spots and employing swift tactics, Kedah has reinforced its message that violations will not be tolerated and offenders will face the full force of the law.
