Sri Aman Civil Defence Destroys Hazardous Beetle Nest Safely

SRI AMAN – Residents of Kampung Muhibbah in Sri Aman were relieved on Wednesday, 15 July 2026, after the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) successfully eliminated a large ground beetle nest that had posed a potential threat to the community.

The incident was reported by a local resident, identified as Brother Rozi, who discovered the sizeable nest on a tree directly in front of his home.

Measuring roughly the size of a football, the nest raised concerns about the safety of his family and neighbours. His prompt complaint to the authorities ensured that the matter was addressed without delay.

Upon receiving the report, APM Sri Aman mobilised a team using district logistics to reach the site, located approximately five kilometres from the PKOD Sri Aman headquarters. The officers arrived swiftly and began by conducting a thorough risk assessment of the area.

Such assessments are standard practice to evaluate the potential dangers posed by insect nests, particularly when they are situated close to residential properties.

Ground beetles, while not typically aggressive, can become a nuisance when nests grow to significant sizes. In some cases, their presence may attract other insects or create discomfort for nearby residents.

According to entomological studies, large beetle colonies can disrupt local ecosystems and, if disturbed, may cause panic among communities unfamiliar with their behaviour. This underlines the importance of professional intervention rather than attempting removal independently.

The APM team proceeded with a controlled operation, applying insecticide spraying techniques to neutralise the nest.

The method was chosen for its effectiveness in ensuring complete eradication while minimising risks to both the personnel and the surrounding environment. The operation concluded once the area was confirmed safe, with no further threat to the household or the wider neighbourhood.

This incident highlights the broader role of the Malaysian Civil Defence Force beyond its well-known disaster response duties.

In addition to managing floods, fires, and other emergencies, the force regularly handles public safety concerns involving wildlife and insects. Such interventions are crucial in maintaining community confidence and preventing minor hazards from escalating into larger issues.

Local authorities have consistently reminded residents to report unusual or potentially dangerous situations promptly. Insect nests, particularly those of wasps, hornets, or beetles, can pose risks if left unattended.

Public awareness campaigns often stress the importance of contacting trained professionals rather than attempting removal, which could result in injury or incomplete eradication.

The Sri Aman operation also reflects the growing emphasis on inter-agency cooperation in Sarawak. While APM led the response in this case, similar incidents often involve coordination with the Fire and Rescue Department or local councils.

This collaborative approach ensures that resources are deployed efficiently and that communities receive timely assistance.

Residents of Kampung Muhibbah expressed gratitude for the swift action taken. The successful removal of the nest not only restored peace of mind but also reinforced the importance of vigilance and community responsibility.

Authorities continue to encourage the public to remain alert to environmental hazards and to engage with official channels when concerns arise.

As Sarawak develops rapidly, balancing urban expansion with ecological management remains a challenge. Incidents such as the beetle nest in Sri Aman serve as reminders of the need for proactive measures to safeguard both residents and the environment. The Civil Defence Force’s intervention demonstrates how structured responses can effectively address localised threats, ensuring safety and stability in rural and urban communities alike.

The operation concluded without incident, and the area has since returned to normal. The Civil Defence Force reaffirmed its commitment to protecting public safety and urged residents to continue cooperating with authorities in reporting hazards promptly.
