SARIKEI – The Sarawak Road Transport Department (JPJ), through its Sarikei Branch, has stepped up enforcement against commercial and goods vehicles with a targeted crackdown operation along the Pan Borneo Highway.

The initiative, carried out on 16 July, focused on the Sarikei–Julau–Bintangor route, aiming to strengthen compliance with road transport laws and improve safety for all highway users.

During the operation, JPJ officers inspected a total of 64 vehicles of various categories. The checks revealed multiple violations, including overloading beyond permitted limits, breaches of licensing conditions under the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP), failure to adhere to traffic signals, and technical faults affecting roadworthiness.

Each offence was dealt with according to existing legal provisions, underscoring JPJ’s commitment to strict enforcement.

Officials explained that the crackdown was part of a broader strategy to ensure that commercial transport operators adhere to regulations designed to safeguard both drivers and the public.

By enforcing compliance, JPJ aims to reduce risks associated with unsafe practices such as overloading and mechanical negligence, which can lead to accidents and disrupt traffic flow.

The Pan Borneo Highway, a major transport artery in Sarawak, has seen increasing traffic from heavy vehicles transporting goods across districts.

Authorities have emphasised that strict monitoring is essential to maintain safety standards and prevent incidents that could endanger lives or damage infrastructure.

JPJ Sarawak has pledged to continue intensifying such operations, recognising that enforcement is a shared responsibility between regulators and road users.

The department highlighted that compliance not only ensures smoother logistics but also contributes to the wider goal of protecting communities along the highway.

Local observers note that enforcement campaigns like this are crucial in addressing recurring issues such as overloaded lorries, which can cause road deterioration and pose hazards to smaller vehicles.

By holding operators accountable, JPJ reinforces the importance of responsible transport practices in sustaining Sarawak’s growing economy.

The Sarikei operation also reflects JPJ’s broader mandate to uphold national road safety standards. Similar initiatives have been rolled out across other districts, with authorities stressing that consistent enforcement is key to reducing accidents and promoting discipline among drivers.

Community leaders have welcomed the move, pointing out that safer highways benefit everyone, from commuters to businesses relying on efficient transport. They urged operators to view compliance not as a burden but as an investment in safety and reliability.

JPJ’s message remains clear: adherence to the law is non-negotiable, and enforcement will continue to be strengthened to protect lives and ensure the smooth functioning of Sarawak’s transport network.
