KUCHING – Members of the United People’s Party (SUPP) Kuching Branch took to the streets of Padungan on Wednesday morning to commemorate the 722nd anniversary of Sarawak Day.
The event, held on 22 July 2026, was designed to foster a deeper sense of patriotism among residents while honouring the historical significance of the date.
The community walkabout began at Petanak Market before proceeding through the bustling streets of the N9 Padungan constituency. Participants engaged directly with local business owners and residents, using the opportunity to discuss the importance of self-government and listen to public concerns.
This grassroots approach aimed to bridge the gap between political representatives and the electorate, reinforcing the branch’s commitment to serving the people.
Leading the procession was Mr Jong Yean Pin, the Acting Branch Chairman and a member of the Central Working Committee. He was joined by key figures within the party structure, including Women’s Chief Ms Chai Men Nyen, Branch Vice Chairman Mr Ting Wei Tzen, and Deputy Youth Chief Mr Tan Kuan Ching.
Also present were Training Secretary Mr Lucas Lim, Social Media Chief Mr David Law, along with various zone leaders and supporters. Their collective presence underscored the party’s emphasis on unity and collaborative service.
Sarawak Day marks the historic moment on 22 July 1963 when the state attained self-government. This milestone is viewed as a foundational chapter in the region’s history, representing the determination and vision of earlier generations.
The SUPP branch highlighted that understanding this heritage is crucial for building a confident and cohesive society today. The event served not just as a celebration, but as an educational platform to remind citizens of the sacrifices made to secure the state’s current status.
During the walk, party officials drew attention to the transformative leadership of the late Tan Sri Adenan Satem, who is credited with championing Sarawak’s rights and autonomy. They also praised the current administration under Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
According to the branch, the Premier’s leadership has been instrumental in accelerating the state’s transition towards a digital and green economy, positioning Sarawak for a high-income future.
A significant portion of the dialogue focused on the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), implemented by the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government. Supporters highlighted tangible progress in several critical sectors, including renewable energy, infrastructure development, and digital transformation.
Improvements in healthcare, education, food security, and high-technology industries were cited as evidence that Sarawak is steadily evolving into a modern, globally competitive state.
The branch emphasised that while the outlook for Sarawak is promising, the realisation of these long-term goals relies heavily on political stability. They argued that a united and forward-looking government is essential to sustain growth and enhance the quality of life for all citizens.
The continuity of effective governance was presented as the key to maintaining the peace and prosperity that the state currently enjoys.
Gratitude was expressed towards both past and present leaders for their unwavering dedication to the state’s development.
The SUPP Kuching Branch acknowledged that the sustained progress achieved over the decades is a result of combined efforts between dedicated leadership and the steadfast support of the populace.
As the walk concluded, the overarching message remained one of collective responsibility. The branch urged citizens to remember their history, appreciate the foundations laid by their predecessors, and strengthen their love for Sarawak.
By working together, they believe it is possible to build a more prosperous and progressive state for future generations. The event ended at noon, leaving participants with a renewed sense of purpose and community spirit.
