BETONG – Physical works have officially commenced on the upgrading of the Ulu Rimbas road, following a formal site handover ceremony held on 21 July 2026. The event marked a significant milestone for the Betong Division Development Agency (BDDA) programme, signalling the transition from planning to active construction for this vital infrastructure project.
The proceedings began with a kick-off meeting chaired by the Divisional Engineer of the Public Works Department (JKR) for the Betong Division. This session allowed key stakeholders to align on project specifications and timelines before the official transfer of the construction site to the appointed contractor. The handover was executed smoothly, paving the way for immediate mobilisation of machinery and personnel to the area.
The scope of the project involves the comprehensive upgrading of approximately 20.5 kilometres of existing road. The works aim to bring the stretch up to JKR R3 road standards, which typically implies a sealed, two-lane carriageway designed to handle higher traffic volumes and heavier vehicles safely. This enhancement is part of the broader BDDA initiative, which focuses on accelerating development in rural divisions through targeted infrastructure improvements.
Completion of the project is scheduled for mid-2028. Once finished, the upgraded road is expected to deliver substantial benefits to the local population, particularly residents in the Debak area and those living along the Jalan Ulu Rimbas corridor. The primary objective is to provide a safer, more comfortable, and higher-quality driving experience, reducing travel time and vehicle wear and tear.
Improved connectivity is a central theme of this development. By enhancing the road network, the government aims to facilitate easier movement of goods and people, thereby boosting local economic activities. Better accessibility also means that residents will have improved access to essential services, including healthcare, education, and administrative facilities located in town centres.
