KUCHING – A comprehensive enforcement drive conducted by the Sarawak Immigration Department has resulted in the detention of thirty foreign nationals across various districts surrounding the state capital. The operation, which spanned two days in late July 2026, targeted establishments suspected of harbouring individuals who had violated immigration statutes.
The enforcement team from the Kuching Division executed a series of coordinated raids between 23 and 24 July. Dubbed under several operational code names including Ops Selera, Ops Kutip, and Ops Sapu, the initiative covered twenty-one distinct locations. These sites were spread across key areas such as Kota Sentosa, Tapah, Siburan, Serian, Kota Samarahan, Batu Kawa, Tabuan Jaya, and Pending.
Authorities commenced their inspections at nine in the morning and continued their efforts until two o’clock in the early hours of the following day. The timing and scope of the operation were designed to address specific concerns raised by members of the public, alongside intelligence gathered by departmental officers regarding potential breaches of the law.
During the course of the raids, officials examined one hundred and seventeen individuals of diverse nationalities. Following thorough checks, thirty foreigners were identified as having allegedly committed offences under the Immigration Act 1959/63. Specifically, these individuals were suspected of violating Section 15(1)(c) and Section 6(1)(c) of the Act, as well as Regulation 11(7)(a) of the Immigration Regulations 1963.
All those detained were subsequently transported to the local Immigration Office. There, they are facing further processing and legal action in strict accordance with prevailing statutory provisions. The department has emphasised that due process is being followed for each case to ensure compliance with national laws.
The focus of this particular enforcement sweep was primarily on restaurant premises, entertainment venues, and locations suspected of facilitating online gambling activities. Intelligence reports had previously highlighted these sectors as potential hotspots for the misuse of passes and permits by foreign workers or visitors. By targeting these specific industries, the department aims to curb the exploitation of legal entry documents for unauthorised employment or extended stays.
