KUCHING – A significant initiative aimed at elevating the standards of the local halal industry was launched in Kuching on 20 July 2026. The Opening Ceremony of the 2026 Sarawak Halal Tour Program took place at the Grand Continental Hotel, marking the start of a comprehensive educational campaign for business owners and industry stakeholders across the state.
The programme is the result of a strategic tripartite collaboration between the Sarawak Islamic Religious Department (JAIS), Maybank Islamic Berhad, and the Universiti Malaya Halal Research Centre (UMHRC). This partnership brings together regulatory oversight, financial expertise, and academic research to create a robust support system for halal entrepreneurs.
The primary objective of the tour is to heighten awareness regarding the Malaysian Halal Certification process. Beyond mere awareness, the initiative seeks to deepen the technical knowledge of entrepreneurs and industry players. By providing detailed insights into compliance requirements, the organisers hope to ensure that businesses not only obtain certification but also maintain the highest standards of operational integrity.
Sahibus Siyadah Tuan Haji Mu’al bin Haji Suaud, the Director of JAIS, officiated the event. In his address, he highlighted the importance of multi-sector cooperation in fostering a resilient industry. He emphasised that the development of a sustainable, competitive, and reliable halal sector requires more than just regulatory enforcement. It demands active engagement from government agencies, financial institutions, and higher learning institutions working in unison.
Tuan Haji Mu’al reaffirmed JAIS’s commitment to strengthening the halal ecosystem in Sarawak. He noted that such strategic collaborations are essential for driving long-term growth and ensuring that Sarawak remains a trusted hub for halal products and services. The involvement of Maybank Islamic Berhad suggests a focus on facilitating financial solutions for halal-compliant businesses, while the participation of UMHRC ensures that the training provided is grounded in the latest research and global best practices.
The launch of the tour comes amidst a period of notable expansion in the state’s certified premises. Data released in conjunction with the event revealed that sixteen frozen food outlets have successfully secured their Malaysian Halal Certification (SPHM) throughout 2026 so far. This figure underscores the growing demand for certified products and the increasing willingness of businesses to adhere to strict halal guidelines.
The newly certified entities include a diverse range of operators. CCK Fresh Mart has received certification for one outlet, while Ayam Champion Marketing Sdn. Bhd. and BTC Freshmart Sdn. Bhd. have each secured certification for four outlets. Additionally, Mahsuri Ria Sdn. Bhd. has two certified outlets, and K&L Farming Industries Sdn. Bhd. has achieved certification for five of its premises.
This steady increase in certified outlets reflects a positive trend in the local market. It indicates that consumers are placing greater trust in premises that display official halal credentials, prompting more businesses to seek accreditation. The expansion of this network is seen as a vital step in building consumer confidence and ensuring that halal dietary requirements are met with transparency and reliability.
The Sarawak Halal Tour Program is expected to travel to various locations within the state, bringing essential training and resources directly to entrepreneurs. By decentralising access to information and support, the organisers aim to reach small and medium-sized enterprises that may otherwise struggle with the complexities of certification.
As the halal industry continues to evolve globally, Sarawak’s proactive approach positions it well for future opportunities. The combination of regulatory guidance, financial support, and academic insight provides a holistic framework for business development. This integrated model not only benefits local entrepreneurs but also enhances the reputation of Sarawak’s halal brand on the international stage.
The success of initiatives like this tour will likely serve as a benchmark for other regions looking to strengthen their own halal ecosystems. By prioritising education and collaboration, Sarawak is laying the groundwork for an industry that is not only compliant but also innovative and resilient in the face of changing market dynamics.
