LUMUT – A joint operation involving the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (Maritime Malaysia) and the General Operations Force (PGA) in Perak resulted in the arrest of 34 undocumented foreign migrants following an attempted entry into the country by sea.
The operation was conducted within the Perak area of responsibility and was carried out as part of efforts to prevent illegal cross-border activities along the state’s coastal waters.
Perak State Maritime Director Maritime Captain Mohamad Shukri Khotob said the integrated operation began on 8 August 2026 and involved two Maritime Malaysia assets. The assets deployed were KM NUSA and Boat Penggalang 1639.
The vessels were used for patrol, detection and interception activities targeting boats suspected of being involved in the transportation of undocumented migrants.
During the operation, Boat Penggalang 1639 detected a vessel believed to have originated from Indonesia.
The vessel was suspected of carrying foreign migrants and was observed moving under cover of darkness towards Teluk Frigi Beach. The detection took place at about 4.20am.
Upon becoming aware of the presence of enforcement assets, the suspected vessel accelerated towards the coastline and moved in the direction of the beach.
A PGA land team positioned in the area responded to the movement and took action to intercept those attempting to enter through the coastal route.
The enforcement team subsequently arrested 34 undocumented foreign migrants at about 5am. Those detained comprised 22 men and 12 women.
The authorities did not provide further details on the identities or nationalities of those arrested beyond stating that the vessel was believed to have come from Indonesia.
Following the arrests, all 34 individuals were handed over to the PGA for further action under the relevant laws.
The operation demonstrated the role of coordinated enforcement between maritime and land-based security agencies in responding to suspected attempts at unauthorised entry.
The use of maritime assets allowed the suspected vessel to be detected while it was approaching the coast, while the PGA team was positioned to respond once the vessel moved towards the landing area.
The authorities said the outcome also highlighted the importance of integrated operations in monitoring potential routes used for illegal cross-border movement.
Co-operation between agencies operating at sea and those responsible for land-based enforcement can allow suspected movements to be detected and intercepted before individuals are able to move further inland.
Maritime Malaysia said it remains committed to strengthening enforcement and surveillance activities in Malaysian waters.
The agency said such efforts are aimed at preventing various forms of illegal cross-border activity, including attempts to enter Malaysia through unauthorised sea routes.
Migrant smuggling is among the activities that enforcement agencies continue to monitor as part of efforts to protect the country’s maritime borders.
The latest operation also reflects the continued use of patrol and detection activities along the Perak coastline to identify vessels considered suspicious or potentially linked to unlawful activities.
The authorities have continued to stress the importance of close co-operation between enforcement agencies in addressing cross-border security concerns.
In this case, the operation involved both maritime patrol assets and a PGA land team, allowing action to be taken at different stages of the suspected entry attempt.
The 34 individuals remain subject to further action by the relevant authorities in accordance with Malaysian law.
Maritime Malaysia said enforcement and monitoring in the country’s waters will continue as part of its efforts to curb unauthorised entry and other illegal cross-border activities.
The agency’s continued operations are also intended to strengthen maritime security and prevent the use of sea routes for unlawful movement into the country.
The successful interception at Teluk Frigi Beach underscores the importance of surveillance and rapid co-ordination between agencies when responding to suspected illegal entry attempts.
