Initial reports revealed that seven of the deceased were Indonesian nationals, while one was a Malaysian. A team from the Sarikei fire station was dispatched to the scene, located approximately 50km away, upon receiving an emergency call.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the aftermath of a catastrophic collision. Two individuals from the pickup truck had already been rescued by bystanders and were being treated by paramedics.
