Sarawak’s Agriculture Transformation A Tech-Driven Future, Says Abang Jo

Sarawak’s Agriculture Transformation: A Tech-Driven Future, Says Abang Jo

KUCHING (Nov 26): Sarawak is set to revolutionize its agriculture sector by leveraging advanced technologies to create a competitive, export-driven industry, according to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Speaking at the Department of Agriculture (DoA) Sarawak’s 100th anniversary celebration last night, Abang Johari highlighted the state government’s commitment to positioning Sarawak as a global agricultural powerhouse over the next 50 years.

“The transformation will not only bolster foreign exchange but also establish Sarawak as a high-income state, significantly improving the standard of living for its people,” he said.

The Premier emphasized the positive impact of this initiative on rural smallholders, particularly those involved in commodity crops like oil palm. He shared an example from Gedong, where smallholders have significantly improved their earnings, enabling them to make substantial purchases such as sports utility vehicles in cash.

Abang Johari also outlined the importance of venturing into downstream sectors to further boost income levels for smallholders.

To support this transformation, the DoA Sarawak workforce will be expanded. Minister of Food Industry, Commodities, and Regional Development Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi announced a request for 262 additional staff members across various grades.

Abang Johari stressed the need for recruits to meet three essential criteria: technological expertise, psychological skills to transform mindsets, and innovative thinking. “New staff must bring measurable and meaningful contributions to the agricultural agenda,” he added.

During the event, Abang Johari received a Special 100-Year Award in recognition of his efforts in promoting modern agricultural technologies and fostering a green and circular economy.

The celebration was attended by Deputy Premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, alongside former deputy chief ministers Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan and Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang.
