Sarawak Government Allocates RM800,000 for Lundu Church Upgrades

KUCHING (Dec 11): The Sarawak government, through the Unit For Other Religions (Unifor), has approved RM800,000 to support development and maintenance projects for four churches in Lundu under Phase 4/2024.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas revealed that the funding will be directed towards the following initiatives:

  • Construction of a new multipurpose hall for St Michael Chapel in Kampung Paon.
  • Upgrades to St Matthew Chapel in Kampung Titiakar.
  • Renovations and purchase of equipment for St Thomas Church in Kampung Sedaing.
  • Extension of the Lady Chapel and altar at St Francis Church.

The allocation, as reported by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas), is part of the state’s ongoing commitment to supporting non-Muslim religious communities. Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg had earlier approved the funds under Unifor’s budget for 2024.

The cheque was presented to The Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, who accepted it on behalf of the Lundu churches during Unifor’s visit to Astana Negeri today. The ceremony was also attended by Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanus, Opar assemblyman Billy Sujang, and Unifor director Dato Georgina Apphia Ngau.

Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas emphasized that the state government remains committed to fostering inclusivity and supporting the needs of diverse religious groups. “This allocation is a testament to Sarawak’s unique harmony and our dedication to ensuring that all communities have the infrastructure to carry out their religious activities,” he said.
