KUCHING, Dec 30 – Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has reaffirmed the state’s commitment to sustainable industries, stating that there is no urgency to exploit its significant mineral reserves, including rare earth elements (RE).
Addressing the media after officiating the groundbreaking ceremony for the Che Hia Khor Moral Uplifting Society Sarawak (CHKMUS) Kidney Foundation Medical and Commercial Building at Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho, Abang Johari emphasised the need for caution in mining ventures.
While acknowledging Sarawak’s position among Malaysia’s top 10 states with abundant mineral reserves, he highlighted that larger deposits of rare earth elements are located in Kedah, Terengganu, and Perlis.
“In Sarawak, we have mining prospects, but mining requires detailed studies to understand its potential environmental impact. Instead of rushing into this, we are focusing on sustainable and clean industries,” Abang Johari said.
The Premier noted that Sarawak enjoys diverse and steady income streams, reducing the state’s reliance on mineral exploitation. He stressed that preserving the environment aligns with Sarawak’s broader economic goals.
“Why should we venture into an industry that may harm the environment when we already have sustainable alternatives? Let the minerals remain untouched for now,” he said.
Abang Johari’s remarks underline Sarawak’s dedication to balancing economic growth with environmental conservation, a key principle of the state’s development strategy. This approach also positions Sarawak as a leader in green energy and sustainable practices within Malaysia.
