KUCHING: The beloved “Cat” statue in Kuching is ready to welcome the Chinese New Year 2025 in style! The iconic symbol of Sarawak’s capital has been given a festive transformation, donning a new traditional costume in celebration of the Year of the Snake.
Deputy Premier of Sarawak, Dr. Sim Kui Hian, together with MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng and other council members, were present to unveil the revamped statue. The transformation includes not just the vibrant new attire but also a fresh touch-up by renowned artist Gerald Goh, who turned the cat’s eyes a striking shade of blue, adding a modern flair to its classic charm.
“This effort is a testament to Kuching’s spirit of unity and inclusivity,” said Dr. Sim Kui Hian. He further praised MBKS for upholding the long-standing tradition of dressing up the iconic statue for every festive season, making it a source of pride for Kuching, the City of Unity.
