LAWAS, Jan 28: Seven Indonesian crew members of a cargo boat that capsized near Kampung Awat-Awat this morning have been successfully rescued.
According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), the incident happened around 9am while the vessel, loaded with rocks, was on its way from Sipitang to Brunei.
The boat’s sudden capsizing led to an emergency response, with initial reports indicating that six crew members were rescued. A seventh crew member was missing, triggering an urgent search and rescue operation.
After hours of coordinated efforts, all seven victims were found and rescued by 2.10pm. The crew members were subsequently transported to Labuan for further assistance.
Authorities confirmed that all the victims are Indonesian nationals. The swift action by rescue teams ensured the safety of everyone involved in this potentially tragic incident.
This incident highlights the importance of maritime safety and the readiness of Sarawak’s rescue teams to respond to emergencies.
