Missing Hunter Found Dead in Cave After 10 Days of Search

Missing Hunter Found Dead in Cave After 10 Days of Search

BARAM, Feb 4: The search for missing hunter Randy Laing Alexander Anyie, who had been missing since January 25 in Kampung Sungai Dua, Long Lama, ended tragically on February 3 when his body was found in a cave. The 40-year-old hunter was last seen leaving his home around 8pm on January 25, heading out for a hunting trip. He failed to inform his family of his exact whereabouts, raising concerns when he did not return home.

The family’s search efforts led them to his abandoned motorcycle near Mile 5 on the Kejin Camp road. On January 27, the Marudi Fire and Rescue Station (BBP Marudi) received a report about Randy’s disappearance and began a full-scale search and rescue (SAR) operation.

According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), the SAR team discovered Randy’s belongings at Mile 3 of Lubang Ungey Cave. The recovery mission, however, was complicated by the narrow and difficult terrain leading to the body. “Initial assessments indicated that the victim’s body had already bloated,” Bomba reported.

Efforts to recover the body using ropes and webbing were unsuccessful, as parts of the body detached due to decomposition. Despite the challenges, a team of five rescuers was deployed to recover the body, but the operation was called off at 6pm due to worsening weather conditions, including heavy rain. After discussions with police (PDRM) and Randy’s family, the operation was officially terminated due to multiple constraints.

Randy’s sudden disappearance and tragic end have left his family and the community in shock. The loss serves as a reminder of the unpredictable dangers of outdoor activities, particularly in challenging and remote terrains.
