MIRI – A fatal collision involving three vehicles has claimed the life of a young motorcyclist in the Permyjaya area, prompting an ongoing police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The crash occurred at approximately 6.30pm on Friday along Jalan Indah 2, involving a pick-up truck and two motorcycles travelling in opposite directions.
According to Miri District Police Chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah, initial inquiries suggest the four-wheel drive vehicle, operated by a 45-year-old local man, veered into the oncoming lane before impact.
One rider, aged 21, was pronounced deceased at the scene by emergency responders. The second motorcyclist, 32, and the pick-up driver escaped without physical injury.
Authorities confirmed the case is being examined under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which addresses causing death through dangerous or reckless driving.
Inspector Nor Afifah Nordin, the designated traffic investigation officer, has appealed for witnesses or individuals with relevant information to contact her directly on 019-5264640 or 085-430479, or to visit the nearest police station.
The deceased has been identified as a food delivery rider, a role that has seen increased visibility on Sarawak’s roads in recent years.
Road safety advocates have long emphasised the importance of lane discipline and defensive driving, particularly on busy urban corridors where mixed traffic flows are common.
ACP Mohd Farhan reminded motorists to remain vigilant, adhere to posted speed limits, and avoid distractions while operating vehicles, especially during evening hours when visibility may be reduced.
The incident marks another sombre reminder of the risks faced by two-wheeled road users, who remain disproportionately vulnerable in multi-vehicle collisions across Malaysia.
Preliminary scene assessments indicated no obvious mechanical faults with any of the vehicles involved, though forensic analysis and witness statements continue to inform the investigative process.
Local residents reported hearing a loud impact followed by emergency sirens, with police and medical teams arriving promptly to secure the area and provide assistance.
Traffic along Jalan Indah 2 experienced temporary disruption as investigators documented evidence and cleared debris, though normal flow was restored within hours.
The Road Transport Act 1987 provides for significant penalties upon conviction under Section 41(1), including potential imprisonment and substantial fines, reflecting the seriousness with which Malaysian law treats fatal traffic offences.
As enquiries proceed, police have urged the public to refrain from speculation and to allow investigators to complete their work without interference.
Community leaders in Permyjaya have expressed condolences to the family of the deceased while reiterating calls for enhanced road safety education and infrastructure improvements in residential zones with high motorcycle usage.
The incident underscores ongoing challenges in balancing urban mobility needs with pedestrian and rider protection, particularly in rapidly developing areas of Sarawak.
