KUCHING, Feb 12: Sarawak has officially acquired MASwings without any liabilities, setting the stage for a new chapter in the state’s aviation history. The newly rebranded airline, AirBorneo, aims to take full flight within 18 months, promising to improve regional connectivity while supporting the state’s economic and tourism growth.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg described the acquisition as a strategic move to boost Sarawak’s air travel sector. AirBorneo will be fully owned by the Sarawak government, with a Board of Directors led by the Sarawak Secretary.
“This is a fresh start for us. All MASwings assets, including its staff and aircraft, will be transferred to AirBorneo. We’re also bringing in newly proposed ATR aircraft with upgraded cabin features,” he said during a press conference after the signing of the Sale and Purchase Agreement (SPA) between the Sarawak government and Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG).
While the acquisition cost remains undisclosed due to commercial sensitivities, Sarawak now has full freedom to expand its fleet and negotiate new aircraft purchases, including plans to introduce jets for longer-haul routes.
Rebranding for Sarawak’s Identity
The airline’s new livery will showcase Sarawak’s unique cultural identity, moving away from the familiar green of MASwings. The operational expansion will focus on key destinations such as Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and Jakarta, with Jakarta prioritized due to the increasing number of tourists and the growing potential for medical tourism.
“Jakarta is only a 1.5-hour flight from here, and many visitors come for medical services,” added Abang Johari.
Strengthening Tourism, Logistics, and Investments
AirBorneo’s vision extends beyond tourism, aiming to enhance Sarawak’s logistics network, support e-commerce, and provide faster delivery services for local handicrafts. The acquisition will also boost Sarawak’s green energy initiatives, attracting investors from Abu Dhabi, Japan, Korea, and the Middle East.
“Having our own airline improves logistics and ensures Sarawak products reach international markets efficiently,” said Abang Johari.
The airline will continue to provide Rural Air Services (RAS) while methodically expanding its routes to regional and international destinations.
“With a solid strategy in place, AirBorneo will grow sustainably and serve Sarawak’s tourism and business sectors, connecting us with the world,” he concluded, expressing gratitude to Transport Minister Anthony Loke for his role in facilitating the acquisition. — DayakDaily
