KUCHING, Jan 30 – Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has confirmed that all federal and state disaster relief resources have been sent to 13 flood-affected areas in Sarawak. The move comes as the state battles severe flooding and landslides, displacing thousands of residents.
Speaking to the media, Ahmad Zahid, who also chairs the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), said the agency is working closely with various parties, including the Ministry of Education, to identify schools and community halls on higher ground. These locations will serve as temporary relief centres for evacuees.

As of now, 48 relief centres are operational, providing shelter to over 6,597 people affected by the floods and landslides. The Deputy Prime Minister also highlighted the need for Bailey bridges in areas where roads have been cut off due to the disaster. He mentioned that discussions with the Royal Engineers Corps are underway to prepare for the construction of these bridges.
In addition, Ahmad Zahid announced the activation of an early warning system to alert residents at least three days before high tide events. This system aims to improve evacuation processes and help residents prepare in advance if they need to leave their homes.
The floods have caused significant disruption across Sarawak, with many families forced to evacuate. The government’s swift response, including the deployment of relief assets and the activation of early warning systems, is expected to mitigate the impact of the disaster.
