Anwar Ibrahim Mourns Passing of Historian Ahmat Adam

KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed his condolences on the passing of eminent historian Prof Emeritus Datuk Dr Ahmat Adam, describing his death as a profound loss to Malaysia’s intellectual and academic community.

Ahmat Adam, who passed away on 3 November 2025, was widely respected for his lifelong dedication to the study of history and his contributions to strengthening Malaysia’s national identity through scholarship.

His works, which spanned colonial history, Malay literature, and socio-political studies, have long been regarded as essential references for academics and students alike.

In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, Anwar said: “My condolences to the entire family on the passing of the late Prof Ahmat Adam. I pray that the family will be granted strength and fortitude, and that his soul will be blessed and placed among the righteous and the faithful.”

The Prime Minister highlighted Ahmat’s role as a scholar who consistently upheld the values of knowledge and truth.

He noted that the late historian’s contributions extended beyond academia, influencing public discourse on Malaysia’s cultural and historical identity.

Ahmat Adam was among 17 distinguished individuals appointed to the National Council of Professors, reflecting his stature as one of the country’s most respected intellectuals.

His research and writings often challenged conventional narratives, encouraging Malaysians to engage critically with their history.

Tributes have poured in from across the academic and cultural sectors, with colleagues remembering him as a mentor and a fearless advocate for historical accuracy.

Many noted his commitment to preserving Malaysia’s historical record and his insistence on rigorous scholarship.

The passing of Ahmat Adam comes at a time when Malaysia continues to grapple with questions of identity, heritage, and national unity.

His absence, observers say, will be deeply felt in ongoing efforts to foster a more inclusive understanding of the nation’s past.

As Malaysia mourns the loss of one of its foremost historians, Anwar Ibrahim’s message underscores the government’s recognition of Ahmat Adam’s enduring legacy.

His scholarship, integrity, and dedication to truth will remain a guiding light for future generations of historians and thinkers.
