SELANGAU – The Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) in Selangau successfully destroyed a large wasp nest discovered in an oil palm plantation at Dijih Tamin on 6 June 2025.
The Selangau District Operations Control Centre received an emergency call from the public reporting the presence of the insect nest. A squad was immediately dispatched to the plantation to investigate the situation.
Upon arrival, the team conducted a survey and identified a wasp nest roughly the size of a football, located on the branch of an oil palm tree approximately 12 feet above ground.
Given the potential danger posed to workers and nearby residents, the squad took swift action to neutralise the threat.
Using controlled burning techniques, the team managed to completely destroy the nest. The operation was carried out safely and efficiently, with no injuries reported among personnel or members of the public.
Authorities confirmed that the procedure was conducted in a secure manner, ensuring that the risk of further infestation was eliminated.
The Civil Defence Force has reminded residents and plantation workers to remain vigilant when encountering insect nests, particularly in agricultural areas where such hazards can easily go unnoticed.
Wasp nests are known to pose serious risks, as their occupants can become aggressive when disturbed, leading to painful stings and potential allergic reactions.
Officials emphasised that the public should immediately contact emergency services if similar situations arise. The Selangau APM hotline, available 24 hours a day at 084-891285, remains open for urgent calls.
Quick reporting allows trained personnel to respond effectively, preventing harm and maintaining safety in the community.
This incident highlights the importance of coordinated emergency response in rural districts, where plantation activities often bring people into close contact with wildlife and insects.
The Civil Defence Force continues to demonstrate its readiness to act in diverse scenarios, from health emergencies to environmental hazards, reinforcing its role as a key pillar of public safety in Sarawak.
The successful conclusion of the operation reflects APM’s commitment to its guiding principles of readiness, speed, and integrity.
Their proactive approach ensures that communities across Selangau and beyond remain protected from unexpected dangers.
