KANOWIT – The Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) in Kanowit responded to a call on Wednesday, 4 March 2026, after a driver reported leaving car keys locked inside a vehicle along Jalan Kubu Ema.
The incident took place around 1.50 pm on a one-kilometre one-way road. When APM personnel arrived, they saw the keys on the passenger seat. Using a specialised key hook, the team retrieved them without damaging the vehicle.
Officials said the situation was resolved quickly, and no complications occurred. The driver regained access to the car, and traffic in the area moved normally during the operation.
APM Kanowit reminded the public that its officers handle many types of emergencies, including vehicle lock incidents.
The unit operates a 24-hour hotline at 013-8150312, while urgent cases are reported through the national emergency line, 999.
Locked-in keys remain a common problem, especially in busy areas where drivers rush or lose focus. Civil Defence teams across Sarawak often step in during such situations, opening vehicles safely without force or damage.
Residents welcomed the quick response. Many said assistance like this reduces stress and prevents further risk, especially when valuables or vulnerable individuals remain inside a vehicle.
The Civil Defence Force urged the public to contact trained personnel rather than trying to unlock vehicles on their own. Attempting to force a door open often leads to damage or injury.
APM Kanowit reaffirmed its commitment to serving the community and encouraged residents to seek help whenever emergencies arise.
