APM Keeps Night Watch as Rain Puts Sungai Maong on Alert

APM Keeps Night Watch as Rain Puts Sungai Maong on Alert

KUCHING: Continuous rain over the past few days has prompted the Malaysian Civil Defence Force to maintain overnight monitoring along Sungai Maong, an area known for its flood risk during prolonged wet weather. Although water levels have shown signs of dropping, authorities say the situation remains delicate, with at least one main access route still impassable to vehicles.

Members from Malaysian Civil Defence Force or APM in Kuching have been stationed in the area since nightfall to closely observe river conditions and ensure public safety. Despite only light drizzle persisting, officers are taking no chances, given the unpredictable nature of weather patterns in the region.

According to APM Kuching District officials, a total of four personnel have been mobilised for this operation. They are equipped with full safety gear, including protective clothing and monitoring tools, to allow them to respond swiftly should conditions worsen. Their presence on the ground is aimed at early detection of any sudden rise in water levels, especially during the night when visibility is lower and risks are higher.

While the river level at Sungai Maong has reportedly receded slightly, the main road near the affected stretch remains unsafe for use. This has caused inconvenience for residents, but safety remains the top priority. Authorities are advising the public to avoid the area until further notice and to comply fully with instructions issued by emergency responders.

As a precautionary step, around eight households living nearby have begun preparing to relocate temporarily. These families have identified a nearby mosque as a safe shelter should evacuation become necessary. APM officers are assisting residents with guidance and remain on standby to help with any immediate relocation if heavy rain returns.

APM Kuching has reaffirmed its commitment to monitor the situation continuously, both day and night. The agency stressed that early action and community cooperation are key to preventing injuries and property damage during the monsoon season. Residents are urged to stay alert, keep updated with official announcements, and avoid spreading unverified information that could cause unnecessary panic.

In closing, the authorities reminded the public that safety is a shared responsibility. Anyone facing emergencies related to flooding or weather-related incidents is encouraged to contact the emergency hotline without delay. With integrity and readiness as its guiding principles, APM Kuching continues to stand guard to protect the community during this period of uncertain weather.
