APM Samarahan Steps Up Flood Monitoring to Safeguard Communities

KOTA SAMARAHAN – The Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) in Samarahan District has intensified its monitoring operations across several flood-prone areas, reinforcing its commitment to community safety during the ongoing rainy season.

On Tuesday evening, patrols were conducted between 5.24 pm and 7.38 pm, covering low-lying zones, key transport routes and residential areas that are frequently impacted by prolonged heavy rainfall.

The initiative reflects APM’s proactive stance in anticipating potential disasters and ensuring swift responses when required.

Among the locations observed were Kampung Plaie, Taman Samarindah, Kampung Sungai Empit, Taman Punan, Muara Tuang Park and Sungai Stigang.

Officers assessed water levels, river currents and surrounding conditions, with each finding carefully documented to enable rapid intervention should risks escalate.

APM Samarahan emphasised that the monitoring is part of a broader preparedness strategy, ensuring that residents remain protected while authorities maintain readiness for any eventuality.

The force reiterated that public safety remains its foremost priority, particularly during periods of unpredictable weather.

The Civil Defence Force has long played a crucial role in disaster management across Sarawak. According to the Department of Irrigation and Drainage Sarawak, flooding remains one of the most persistent natural hazards in the state, often linked to monsoon rains and flash floods.

With increasing development in river valleys and low-lying areas, the risk of flooding continues to demand vigilant monitoring and community awareness.

Recent efforts by APM units in other districts, such as Dalat, have also highlighted the importance of early preparedness ahead of the Northeast Monsoon.

These measures include strengthening operational centres, reviewing response strategies and ensuring that equipment and personnel are ready for deployment.

In Samarahan, the latest patrols demonstrate a similar level of readiness. By systematically recording environmental changes, APM ensures that any rise in water levels or unusual activity can be addressed without delay.

The force has also urged residents to remain alert, comply with official instructions and promptly report any irregularities related to flooding.

Community cooperation is seen as vital in reducing risks. APM reminded the public that timely reporting of incidents can significantly improve response times and minimise potential damage.

The organisation continues to encourage residents to adopt precautionary measures, particularly in areas historically affected by floods.

As Sarawak braces for seasonal weather patterns, the collaboration between authorities and communities remains central to disaster resilience.

APM Samarahan’s latest initiative underscores the importance of vigilance, preparedness and collective responsibility in safeguarding lives and property.
