SARIKEI – The Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) Sarikei District successfully captured an otter that had entered a residence along Jalan Fortuna on 23 April 2026.
The incident was reported by a member of the public, prompting a rapid response from APM Sarikei. Four personnel were immediately dispatched to the location to assist.
Upon arrival, the team confirmed the presence of the animal inside the house and initiated a safe capture operation.
Using specialised equipment, the officers employed a netting method to secure the otter without causing harm to the occupants or the animal itself.
The operation was completed smoothly, and the otter was removed from the premises. Following the successful capture, the team returned to the Sarikei District Operations Control Centre (PKOD).
Authorities highlighted that such interventions are part of APM’s ongoing commitment to public safety and wildlife management.
While otters are not typically aggressive, their unexpected presence in residential areas can cause concern among residents.
The safe handling of the situation demonstrated the preparedness and professionalism of the Civil Defence Force.
The APM Sarikei District reminded the public to remain vigilant and to contact emergency services immediately if wild animals are encountered in homes or populated areas.
Quick reporting ensures that trained personnel can respond effectively, minimising risks to both humans and wildlife.
This case reflects the increasing need for cooperation between communities and agencies in managing wildlife encounters, particularly in areas where human activity overlaps with natural habitats.
The Civil Defence Force reiterated its motto of “Always with Civil Defence” and “APM Forever”, underscoring its dedication to safeguarding communities.
