SIBU – The Sarawak Civil Defence Force APM Sibu successfully captured a large python in a residential area of Lanang on Saturday evening.
At 8:33 pm, the unit received a call from a member of the public reporting the presence of a snake in a chicken coop located behind a house at No. 4A, Lorong 4, Jalan Harmoni. The alert prompted immediate action by the emergency response team.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers identified the snake as a python measuring approximately 10 feet in length. Using specialised equipment, including a snake-catching pole, the APM team was able to safely capture the reptile without incident. The operation was carried out smoothly, ensuring the safety of both residents and the animal.
Authorities reminded the public that encounters with wildlife, particularly large snakes, should be reported immediately to trained personnel rather than attempting to handle the situation themselves. Pythons, while non-venomous, can be dangerous if provoked, especially in residential areas.
Residents in Sibu are urged to remain vigilant in areas where snakes may be present, such as chicken coops, gardens, and wooded surroundings. Keeping these areas clear of debris and maintaining proper fencing can reduce the likelihood of wildlife entering homes.
For emergencies involving wildlife or other hazards, the APM Sibu unit advised calling 999 or the official PKOD Sibu contact number. These services are staffed by trained personnel equipped to respond safely and efficiently.
The APM Sibu Public Relations and Documentation Unit confirmed that the situation was fully resolved and that no residents were harmed during the incident. The captured python was relocated safely, in accordance with wildlife management protocols.
This incident highlights the importance of prompt reporting and professional response when wildlife enters urban or residential zones. APM continues to maintain readiness to handle similar emergencies and safeguard the community while respecting local wildlife.
