Floodwaters Recede at Arip River but Residents Remain in PPS

SELANGAU – The Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) in Selangau, working alongside the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM), has confirmed that water levels along the Arip River are gradually receding following recent flooding.

Monitoring conducted on Monday morning, 12 January 2026, at 8.16 am revealed that while low-lying areas remain inundated, conditions have improved sufficiently for pedestrians to pass through.

Officials noted that floodwaters in Rumah Jambai and Rumah David, which were previously affected, have now fully subsided.

Despite the improvement, residents from the impacted areas continue to be housed at the SK Bukit Arip Temporary Evacuation Centre (PPS).

Authorities explained that the precautionary measure ensures community safety until conditions are fully stabilised.

The PPS at SK Bukit Arip has been a focal point for relief efforts in Selangau, providing shelter, food and medical support to displaced families.

The centre was activated earlier this month when heavy rainfall caused rivers to overflow, affecting longhouses and cutting off road access in several parts of the district.

Flooding in Selangau forms part of a wider challenge across Sarawak, where multiple districts have reported similar incidents during the monsoon season.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee previously confirmed that more than 3,000 individuals were displaced statewide, with 25 evacuation centres opened in districts including Sibu, Bintulu and Sebauh.

Local officials emphasised that while the Arip River’s water level is showing a downward trend, vigilance remains crucial.

Continuous monitoring is being carried out to track developments, and residents have been urged to remain cautious, especially in flood-prone zones.

The Civil Defence Force reiterated its readiness to respond to emergencies, reminding the public that assistance is available through its 24-hour hotline at 084-891285.

Authorities assured that updates will be provided regularly, with disaster management teams prepared to act swiftly should conditions worsen.

The Civil Defence Force reaffirmed its guiding principle of “Ready, Fast, With Integrity” in safeguarding communities.
