KUCHING – The grounds of Astana Negeri Sarawak were filled with festive cheer as more than 25,000 visitors joined the Hari Raya Aidilfitri 1447H/2026 celebration on 21 March.
The event, hosted by Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, brought together leaders, families, and communities in a vibrant display of unity.
The ceremony commenced at 9.30 am with a formal gathering at the Dewan Santapan. Distinguished guests included Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Haji Fadillah Yusof and his wife, Datin Amar Ruziah Mohd Tahir, alongside Sarawak’s Deputy Premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian.
Also in attendance were Speaker of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar, federal and state ministers, senior officials, and their spouses.
Family members of the Head of State were present, including Sharifah Fariah with her husband, Encik Muhammad Syukri Mohamad Draim; Sharifah Nong Jasima with Encik Muhammad Nur Hakeem Yusop; and Sharifah Nuril Barieyah with Encik David James Foley. Grandchildren Puteri Athena Maimunah and Feona Elsie Norjannah Foley also joined the occasion.
By late morning, the Astana compound opened its doors to the public. Visitors from across Sarawak and international tourists arrived to extend festive greetings, with crowds continuing until 4.00 pm. Many attendees wore traditional attire, reflecting the cultural diversity of the state.
The celebration was further enhanced by community activities. Children participated in a colouring competition, while bamboo cannon displays and entertainment performances added to the lively atmosphere.
Food stalls offered a variety of traditional Hari Raya dishes, ensuring guests enjoyed both cultural and culinary experiences.
The event highlighted Sarawak’s hallmark of inclusivity, with people of different backgrounds celebrating side by side. Organisers emphasised that such gatherings strengthen ties between leaders and citizens, reinforcing the values of harmony and goodwill.
In his remarks, Tun Pehin Sri Wan Junaidi expressed gratitude for the overwhelming turnout. He and Toh Puan Fauziah thanked all parties involved in the successful organisation of the event, noting that the celebration symbolised the unity and resilience of Sarawak’s people.
They also conveyed prayers that Aidilfitri would bring blessings, prosperity, and continued solidarity across the state. The ceremony at Astana Sarawak once again demonstrated how festive traditions serve as a bridge between communities, leaders, and visitors in an atmosphere of warmth and togetherness.
