MBKS & Autism Society Launch Ausome Park, First of Its Kind in Kuching

KUCHING, 5 June 2025 In a major step towards building a more inclusive community, the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) and Kuching Autism Society have launched “Ausome Park”, a special playground designed for children with autism. This new facility, located within the MBKS park area, provides a safe and therapeutic environment for autistic children to play, learn, and socialise.

Sarawak Deputy Premier and Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, officiated the launch. Speaking to reporters, he said the park is part of a larger effort to help children with autism integrate into the community and overcome stigma.

“This group is often overlooked. We want the government and society to play a role. Every little support counts,” he said.

Dr Sim also stressed the importance of breaking outdated mindsets towards mental health and autism. He pointed out how increased use of social media and cyberbullying has made mental health an urgent issue that can no longer be ignored.

“Mental health today is not what it used to be. We need to adapt and create more inclusive spaces. This aligns with the goals of the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030),” he added.

Datuk Wee Hong Seng, Mayor of Kuching South, shared that the park idea started when MBKS planned to apply for funding for a children’s playground last year. He said the park is not just for autistic children but also raises public awareness as it is located in a busy area.

“Many families come here daily. This park is now a platform to spread awareness and encourage more inclusive designs,” he said.

Datuk Wee also urged the community to support the efforts of MBKS and NGOs in advocating for the rights and wellbeing of autistic individuals, particularly in public spaces.

“Ausome Park” stands as a shining example of what can be achieved when local authorities and civil society work together with compassion and vision. It is not only a play space—it’s a step forward for inclusion in Sarawak. — UKAS
