SADONG JAYA – The importance of nurturing Quran reading skills from an early age was emphasised by Awla Dris, State Assemblyman for Simunjan, during the Khatamal Quran Ceremony at Sekolah Kebangsaan Haji Bujang Rangawan Putin.
Awla reminded students that the Quran is regarded as a lifelong companion, one that should be consistently read and practised to maintain fluency.
She explained that children absorb lessons more quickly, making early exposure vital, while older learners often face greater challenges in mastering the text.
“People call the Quran a life companion. It wants us to always open and read it so that the fluency remains,” she said, stressing that consistent practice is necessary to prevent skills from diminishing over time.
The assemblywoman also encouraged pupils to balance their academic studies with religious learning. She noted that both elements are essential foundations as students progress to secondary school and eventually higher education.
According to her, Quranic knowledge acquired during school years will serve as a moral and spiritual guide, particularly when students travel or live away from their families.
The ceremony celebrated the achievements of 36 Year Six students who had successfully completed their Quran studies. The event was conducted in an orderly and lively manner, reflecting the pride of the school community in the students’ accomplishments.
Awla further advised students to organise their study schedules effectively, ensuring that Quran reading remains a regular part of their routine. She highlighted that religious knowledge, when combined with academic excellence, equips young people with the necessary tools to face future challenges.
The ceremony was attended by several key figures, including Headmaster Hasiah Gidir, representative of the Samarahan District Education Officer Muhamad Zulfikri Ibrahim, and President of the Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG) Sapiee Hanapi.
Their presence underscored the collective support for integrating religious education into the broader learning environment.
The event also reflected Sarawak’s wider emphasis on strengthening religious knowledge among students, ensuring that values of discipline, respect and faith remain central to their development.
By instilling Quranic learning at a young age, educators and leaders hope to cultivate a generation that carries these principles throughout life.
