Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh — Bangladesh is set to host a pivotal international conference in Cox’s Bazar from August 24 to 26, aiming to address the ongoing Rohingya refugee crisis.
This conference serves as a precursor to a high-level United Nations event scheduled for September 30 in New York, held alongside the UN General Assembly.
The gathering in Cox’s Bazar will bring together delegates from over 40 countries, UN agencies, and diplomatic missions.
Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus is scheduled to attend as the chief guest, underscoring the government’s commitment to resolving the crisis.
A special session will also include Rohingya representatives, allowing them to share their experiences and aspirations directly with international stakeholders.
Key topics of discussion will include the safe, voluntary, and dignified repatriation of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar’s Rakhine State, humanitarian assistance, and the development of a comprehensive roadmap for their return. The conference aims to mobilize international support and accelerate the repatriation process.
Chief Adviser Yunus has expressed hope that the UN conference in New York will provide concrete pathways to resolve the prolonged Rohingya crisis.
He highlighted the challenges posed by recent cuts in financial support to Rohingya refugees, which have impacted essential services such as health and education. Yunus has urged continued efforts to ensure adequate funding for these services.
This conference marks the first of three international events planned this year to address the Rohingya issue. The subsequent conferences will take place in New York and Doha, Qatar, in September and December, respectively.
Through these initiatives, Bangladesh aims to reinvigorate global attention on the crisis and work towards a sustainable solution.
