Batang Ai Power Plant to Make History with 170 MW Hydro-Solar Power Generation

Batang Ai Power Plant to Make History with 170 MW Hydro-Solar Power Generation

LUBOK ANTU: The Batang Ai Power Plant is set to enter the record books as Malaysia’s first facility to generate up to 170 megawatts (MW) of electricity through a combination of hydro and solar energy, marking a major milestone in Sarawak’s renewable energy journey.

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg announced that the project would be realised once the state’s first floating solar farm at Batang Ai is fully completed.

“This floating solar project will complement the existing hydropower system. We will add another 120 MW to the current 50 MW capacity, making Batang Ai capable of producing 170 MW of electricity,” he said. “This could make it the largest power plant in Malaysia,” he added during the 40th Anniversary Ceremony of the Batang Ai Hydroelectric Plant on Monday.

The Premier emphasised that the Sarawak Government is determined to continue exploring diverse renewable energy sources to meet its ambitious target of producing 10 gigawatts (GW) of clean energy by 2030.

He said this includes exploring biomass energy, cascading dams, and adopting advanced turbine technologies that enhance the efficiency of hydropower generation.

“In the near future, new technologies will allow turbines to rotate even faster,” Abang Zohari said. “I have seen some new turbine designs that can increase hydropower output significantly.”

The move aligns with Sarawak’s long-term goal of becoming a regional leader in green energy production, positioning the state as a key player in supporting Malaysia’s energy transition and sustainability agenda.

Among those present at the ceremony were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian, Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, Deputy Minister of Utility (Sarawak Energy and PETROS) Dato Ibrahim Baki, Deputy Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment and Batang Ai Assemblyman Datuk Dr Malcolm Mussen Lamoh, Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) CEO Datuk Sharbini Suhaili, and Sri Aman Division Resident Mahra Salleh.

With this development, Batang Ai continues to stand as a symbol of Sarawak’s progress — bridging tradition and innovation to power the future. – UKAS
