SEBUYAU – The long-awaited Batang Lupar 1 Bridge project is entering its final stages, with completion expected soon and public access scheduled for mid-May 2026.
According to the Public Works Department (JKR) Samarahan Division, the bridge will play a crucial role in strengthening Sarawak’s coastal road network. Once operational, it will provide smoother connectivity between communities and reduce reliance on ferry services, which have long been the primary means of crossing the Batang Lupar River.
The Batang Lupar 1 Bridge is part of Sarawak’s wider infrastructure development plan aimed at improving accessibility across rural and urban areas. The project is also aligned with the state’s vision of enhancing economic growth by facilitating easier movement of goods, services, and people.
Local residents and businesses are anticipating significant benefits from the new link. Improved road access is expected to reduce travel time, boost tourism potential, and support local industries by ensuring more efficient transport routes.
The bridge, located near Sebuyau, has been under construction for several years and represents one of the largest infrastructure undertakings in the region. Its completion will mark a milestone in Sarawak’s efforts to modernise its transport system and provide long-term solutions to connectivity challenges.
Officials have highlighted that the project is not only about convenience but also about safety. By reducing dependence on ferry crossings, the bridge will help minimise risks associated with river travel, particularly during adverse weather conditions.
The Batang Lupar 1 Bridge is one of several major bridges being developed under Sarawak’s coastal road initiative. Together, these projects are expected to transform mobility across the state, linking communities that were previously isolated and opening new opportunities for development.
As the mid-May opening approaches, final works are being carried out to ensure the bridge meets safety and quality standards. Authorities have assured the public that the structure will be ready on schedule, providing a modern and reliable crossing for thousands of daily users.
The completion of Batang Lupar 1 Bridge is set to be a landmark achievement for Sarawak, symbolising progress in infrastructure and a commitment to improving the lives of its people.
