Batang Lupar Bridge 1 Stitching Ceremony Marks Major Milestone

SAMARAHAN – A significant development in the state infrastructure has been achieved on January 26 when the successful ‘Stitching’ of Batang Lupar Bridge 1 was done, signalling first connection of the bridge’s main structure.

The proceedings were officiated by Yang Berhormat Datuk Ir. Aidel Lariwoo: Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development (Development).

His attendance was a demonstration of the commitment from the Sarawak Government in developing strategic connectivity networks that cater to the well-being at the community level and economic growth.

It is a two lane one way bridge across the Batang Lupar River. The construction was built to the JKR R5 Standard, and features 87 river piers and a total span length of 4,884m making it one of Sarawak’s most daring bridge projects.

The move would see the existing Batang Lupar ferry service replaced by the permanent bridge which will provide a safer and faster link between Sebuyau and Triso.

When in service, it will offer a 24-hour passage over the river and would open up a broader way for trade between the two sides of the region as well as to new areas for commerce, agriculture and tourism.

This will help generate sustainable socio-economic development within the Sebuyau–Triso corridor and accelerate progress in Sarawak’s coastal region.

They said Batang Lupar Bridge 1 is expected to be completed in May 2026, and will be the longest river crossing bridge in Malaysia and a national landmark of engineering as well as a symbol of Sarawak’s development.

The project is also believed to be a game-changer for the region, as it will result in better linkages for remote communities, while complementing Sarawak’s plan to upgrade its infrastructure.

The completion of the bridge is estimated to decrease travel time, increase logistics and provide economic opportunities for local businesses.

JKR Sarawak reiterated the promise that every construction work is completed to meet best quality, safety and ethical standard.

The department added that the Batang Lupar Bridge will also be a testament to Sarawak’s aspirations of developing infrastructure for its people and future generations.

It is both a technical feat and a symbolic venture into connectedness, emblematic of the state’s intent to push ahead its development agenda.
