BETONG — A long-standing dream of thousands of coastal residents in Beladin and Pusa has finally materialised with the completion of the Batang Saribas 1 Bridge — a 1.55-kilometre span now hailed as a symbol of connectivity, progress, and promise for the region’s future.
The bridge, inaugurated by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg on Saturday, marks a historic milestone in Sarawak’s rural infrastructure development. Constructed at a cost of RM375.5 million, the 16-span bridge is accompanied by a 6.7-kilometre new road that now seamlessly connects Beladin and Pusa — two areas previously separated by reliance on ferry services that often caused long travel delays.
“This is no longer just a bridge. It is the pulse of new life and the realisation of a hope long held by coastal communities,” the Premier remarked at the launching ceremony.
For the people of Kampung Hilir Pusa, the new bridge brings transformative change. “We used to wait nearly an hour for the ferry. Now, it’s just a few minutes to cross,” said Mat Saini, the village head, who praised the Sarawak Government’s vision for uplifting rural communities.
Jaafar Yusup, the Village Head of Pusa Tengah, echoed the sentiment, calling the bridge a new landmark for the area. “We’ve waited a long time for this. It’s not just about convenience—it’s about economic growth and community development,” he said.
In Beladin, the bridge has sparked optimism for local economic expansion. “It will be a catalyst for business and development,” said Awang Subih Awang Halil, Village Head of Hilir Beladin. “We are truly grateful to the Premier and the Sarawak Government for this meaningful project.”
The Batang Saribas 1 Bridge stands as a monumental achievement, not only linking two sides of the Saribas River but also opening up endless opportunities for trade, mobility, and prosperity in one of Sarawak’s vital coastal regions.
