Kuching – During the Chinese New Year celebrations on 19th February 2026, a car accident in front of the McDonald’s restaurant in Batu Kawa left two people injured, drawing the swift assistance of local residents.
The accident occurred at approximately 11:10 am when a car, reportedly driven by a male driver suspected of being under the influence, collided with a road divider and crashed. There were three people inside the vehicle at the time. The driver escaped without injuries, but his wife and an elderly female passenger sustained injuries that required immediate medical attention. Both victims were transported to the hospital for treatment.
Eyewitnesses at the scene moved quickly to assist. The first person to respond was a man described as having Indian features, driving a pink Wira car. He was soon joined by a local Malay man, identified as Zaidi, who runs a shop nearby. Later, a mother and her daughters also came forward to help, including calling the ambulance and notifying the police.
It was raining during the incident, and Zaidi was soaked as he assisted the victims without an umbrella. According to eyewitnesses, several large parang knives were spotted inside the crashed car and were promptly reported to the authorities.
The accident serves as a reminder of the unity and quick response shown by members of the community, as strangers from different backgrounds came together to provide immediate help during a busy festive period.
Authorities urge drivers to exercise caution, particularly during peak festive seasons, to prevent similar incidents.
