KUCHING – More than 300 residents in the N.14 Batu Kawah state constituency have successfully secured their Class B2 driving licences following a targeted community assistance initiative.
The presentation ceremony for the 2026 programme was held on Sunday at the SM Min Lit hall. It was officiated by Datuk Amar Prof. Dr. Sim Kui Hian, who serves as Sarawak’s Deputy Premier, Minister for Public Health, Local Government and Housing, and the assemblyman for the constituency.
A total of 346 candidates cleared the necessary screening, theory, and practical examinations to qualify for the licences. The initiative aligns with broader national efforts by the Ministry of Transport and the Road Transport Department (JPJ) to facilitate legal licensing.
This initiative addresses a persistent challenge in Malaysian road safety: the prevalence of unlicensed riders. By providing structured support, the programme helps demystify the licensing process for residents who might otherwise face financial or logistical barriers.
Class B2 licences, which permit the riding of motorcycles with a capacity of up to 250cc, are particularly relevant for students and young working adults. Facilitating legal access to this certification directly enhances community mobility, allowing safer travel to educational institutions and workplaces.
Beyond merely distributing licences, the programme emphasises the critical importance of road safety and strict adherence to traffic regulations. Officials stressed that legal compliance remains a fundamental responsibility for all newly certified motorists.
The event also featured active participation from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) Padawan District Headquarters. District Police Chief Superintendent Barry Anak William attended alongside officers from the local AMANITA unit.
Law enforcement personnel conducted educational exhibitions and delivered road safety briefings. These sessions involved the Traffic, Commercial Crime, and Narcotics divisions, aiming to inform participants about legal compliance and the police role in safeguarding public welfare.
Highlighting the collaborative nature of the initiative, the police force reiterated a core message to the attendees: “The Police and the Community Are Inseparable.”
Mr Mohamad Faizal David bin Jemat, Deputy Director of JPJ Sarawak, was also in attendance. He expressed gratitude to all stakeholders involved in executing the programme, noting that seamless cooperation is vital for achieving such community objectives.
Nationwide, similar constituency-level assistance schemes have been rolled out to democratise access to driving credentials. These efforts form part of a wider strategy to reduce road fatalities by ensuring that all operators possess verified competence before navigating public thoroughfares.
The successful candidates were urged to adopt prudent driving habits moving forward. Authorities emphasised that prioritising personal safety and the well-being of other road users must remain a constant focus for every new licence holder.
