BATU KAWA – The Batu Kawa constituency is set for a major transformation, with plans to redevelop the Ang Cheng Ho Quarry area into a vibrant lifestyle, cultural and tourism hub. The announcement was made by Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian during the Sarawak Open International Dragon and Lion Dance Cup 2025 on Saturday.
The redevelopment project, covering approximately 70 acres, will be carried out in phases. It will include feature lighting, recreational parks, commercial hubs and residential expansion, with the quarry’s water body to be converted into a themed attraction.
Dr Sim revealed that by 2030, Batu Kawa will boast a major water theme park, a shopping centre and surrounding developments, positioning the area as a key destination for both locals and tourists. He noted that property values in Batu Kawa have already risen in recent years, reflecting investor confidence and continuous infrastructure upgrades.
He encouraged families and young professionals to take advantage of the emerging opportunities, highlighting that the area’s growth will bring new amenities and lifestyle options.
The Deputy Premier also described the international cultural sports event as a fitting showcase of Batu Kawa’s growing prominence.
The Sarawak Open International Dragon and Lion Dance Cup 2025, held at the Ang Cheng Ho Quarry Multi-Purpose Hall, featured more than 500 performers from 46 teams across Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines and China.
The event, sanctioned by the Dragon and Lion Dance Federation of Malaysia, was organised by the Chinese Martial Art Association (CMAA).
Dr Sim emphasised that cultural events of this scale not only attract visitors but also stimulate demand for local services and small businesses, further boosting the local economy.
He expressed appreciation to national federations, judges and participating teams, noting that their involvement enhances Sarawak’s reputation as a host for international cultural showcases.
“Hopefully with Sarawak doing well, the rest of Malaysia can follow us. We want Sarawak to lead,” he said.
Among those present were Padawan Municipal Council Chairman Tan Kai, Dragon and Lion Dance Federation of Malaysia Secretary General Datuk Yong Kheng Chien, SOIDLDC2025 Organising Chairman and CMAA President Chester Lim, and SOIDLDC2025 Competition Chairman Pemanca Tan Kun Gee.
The redevelopment of Batu Kawa is part of Sarawak’s broader urban development strategy, which also includes transforming nearby areas such as Bau and Matang into tourism and lifestyle destinations.
With its combination of cultural events, infrastructure upgrades and large-scale projects, Batu Kawa is expected to become a satellite township and a leading lifestyle hub in the years ahead.
