Bau Police Capture Two Men After High-Stakes Cable Theft Chase

KUCHING (Jan 25): Two men suspected of cable theft were nabbed by Bau police following a dramatic car chase during Op Lusuh on Friday.

Bau district police chief DSP Dr. Daram Ruer revealed that the suspects were caught with a bundle of cables, burglary tools, and sharp weapons in their vehicle during a subsequent search.

“At around 11am, a police team from IPD Bau encountered a suspicious white Proton Wira during Op Lusuh. When officers attempted to stop the car, the suspects fled, leading to a car chase. The vehicle was eventually apprehended,” said Dr. Daram in a press release.

Initial checks revealed that the suspects had previous drug-related offences. The case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code. A remand application has been filed at the Magistrate’s Court to assist investigations and determine if the suspects are linked to other thefts.

Earlier that morning, at around 7am, a Rural Water Supply Department assistant engineer and a security guard reported two unidentified individuals cutting cables at a booster pump facility in Gumbang.

“The suspects gained access to the pump house by cutting through a damaged fence. A white Proton Wira, matching the suspects’ car, was parked nearby,” added Dr. Daram.

When approached, one of the suspects reportedly chased the complainant with a samurai sword. They also stole a motorcycle key belonging to the security guard.

The estimated loss due to the stolen cables is RM500.

Police urge members of the public with information on cable theft in Bau to report it at the nearest police station or contact 082-763 311.
