KUCHING – Families displaced by recent flash floods in Kuching received vital food support this week, as Borneo Development Corporation (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd (BDC) distributed 250 meal packs to evacuees at the Pusat Perpindahan Sementara (PPS) Rantau Panjang.
The distribution took place on 2 January 2026 at Dewan SJK (C) Chung Hwa Batu Kawa, where PPS Rantau Panjang has been set up to house residents affected by the floods. The packs, consisting of meals from KFC, were handed out to evacuees currently sheltering at the centre.
BDC explained that the initiative was part of its wider humanitarian programme aimed at easing the immediate burden faced by flood victims. The corporation emphasised that the food aid was not only intended to meet basic nutritional needs, but also to provide comfort and encouragement to those enduring temporary displacement.
In its statement, the company noted: “The timely assistance was intended not only to provide sustenance but also to help uplift the morale of evacuees as they navigate the challenges posed by the disaster.”
The recent flash floods in Kuching and surrounding areas have forced many families to seek refuge at temporary relief centres. According to local disaster management authorities, PPS facilities play a crucial role in ensuring evacuees have access to shelter, food, and medical support during emergencies.
BDC highlighted that its contribution reflects a broader commitment to compassion, social responsibility, and solidarity with communities in distress. The corporation has previously supported relief efforts across Sarawak, reinforcing its role as a partner in disaster response alongside government agencies and non-governmental organisations.
Observers note that corporate involvement in disaster relief often complements official measures, helping to ensure aid reaches affected communities more swiftly. In Sarawak, such partnerships have become increasingly important as climate-related events, including flash floods, continue to pose challenges to local populations.
The PPS Rantau Panjang centre has been one of several facilities activated to accommodate evacuees in recent days. Relief organisations and volunteers have been working alongside government bodies to provide essential supplies, including food, clean water, and medical assistance.
BDC’s latest initiative underscores the importance of collective action in times of crisis. By stepping in to provide immediate food support, the corporation has helped alleviate some of the stress faced by families uprooted by the floods.
As Sarawak continues to strengthen its disaster preparedness, contributions from both public and private sectors remain vital in ensuring communities can recover quickly and safely from natural calamities.
