Sarawak Energy Holds Tree Planting at BEM Mukah Plant

MUKAH – Staff members from Sarawak Energy Berhad and the Sarawak Forest Department gathered at the Balingian Energy Minerals (BEM) Coal Handling and Processing Plant on 5 March 2026 for a symbolic tree planting activity.

The programme saw 20 native saplings planted around the BEM office compound in Mukah. The chosen species included Azadirachta excelsa and Casuarina equisetifolia. These trees were selected because they grow well in local soil conditions and help improve biodiversity around industrial areas.

The activity was attended by employees from Sarawak Energy, led by Chief Financial Officer Tan Kok Kiong and Chief Operating Officer Alvin Lim Khiok Liong. They were joined by general managers, executive staff, and officers from the Forest Department.

Organisers said the initiative reflects Sarawak Energy’s focus on environmental responsibility. The company wants development and nature protection to move forward together. Tree planting programmes help raise awareness among workers and nearby communities about protecting natural resources.

The partnership between BEM and the Forest Department forms part of wider conservation efforts across Sarawak. Such activities support long-term environmental health while strengthening cooperation between industry players and government agencies.

Officials added that tree planting improves the local environment and reminds people of the need to protect forests for future generations. The symbolic gesture at BEM shows how industry can support green practices while contributing to sustainable development goals in the state.

With continued cooperation between Sarawak Energy and the Forest Department, similar environmental programmes are expected to expand to other operational sites across the region.
