BETONG – A routine day for villagers in Sungai Pasa took an unexpected turn when a crocodile was discovered trapped inside a fish net on Tuesday morning.
The incident occurred at around 8.21am, when a resident noticed the reptile caught in his fishing equipment.
Unable to free itself, the crocodile remained stuck until the Betong District Civil Defence Force (APM) was alerted.
Five members of the Bravo Squad were immediately dispatched to the location. Upon arrival, they confirmed that the animal, identified as a juvenile frog crocodile, had become entangled in the trap.
Measuring approximately five feet in length and weighing around 15 kilograms, the crocodile posed a potential risk to the community if not handled properly.
The team prepared a rope snare to facilitate the capture. Using careful manoeuvres, the officers secured the reptile without incident.
Remarkably, the crocodile displayed no aggression during the operation, which allowed the rescue to proceed smoothly.
Once restrained, the animal was transported to the Betong District Operations Control Centre. Officials later confirmed that the crocodile would be released back into its natural habitat, ensuring both the safety of the villagers and the welfare of the reptile.
Local authorities emphasised that such encounters highlight the importance of community vigilance in areas where wildlife and human activity intersect.
Crocodiles are known to inhabit rivers and wetlands across Sarawak, and occasional sightings near villages are not uncommon.
The Civil Defence Force reiterated its commitment to responding swiftly to wildlife-related emergencies. By working closely with residents, the agency aims to reduce risks while preserving ecological balance.
This latest case adds to a series of wildlife interventions carried out in Betong, reflecting ongoing efforts to manage human–animal interactions responsibly.
The successful capture and release of the crocodile demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated action between villagers and emergency responders.
