New Mosque in Betong Set to Unite and Uplift the Muslim Community

New Mosque in Betong Set to Unite and Uplift the Muslim Community

BETONG – The Muslim community in Betong Division will soon have a new landmark with the construction of a modern mosque that is set to become a unifying symbol and a driving force for spiritual and communal development.

Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department, Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, who is also the Project Coordinator for the Regional Development Agency, North Kuching City Hall, and Sarawak Islamic Affairs, officially launched the project on Sunday.

In his speech, Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman emphasised that mosques are more than just physical structures — they are vital institutions that uphold Islamic principles, foster identity, and act as pillars of moral and intellectual growth for the ummah.

“The mosque is a symbol and centre for upholding Islamic sharia, and it serves as a platform to shape an educated and virtuous Muslim society. This new mosque will reflect not only our spiritual commitment but also our commitment to unity and progress,” he said.

He highlighted that the mosque will also serve as a hub for community bonding, promoting interfaith harmony and inclusiveness, in line with Sarawak’s vision of unity in diversity.

“Our mosque must function as a centre for unity and community well-being. Programmes organised here should reach all layers of society,” he added, stressing the importance of quality programming and inclusive outreach.

Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman also urged that mosques expand their roles as centres of knowledge by offering religious classes, lectures, and scholarly programmes to improve the community’s understanding of Islam and encourage lifelong learning.

He expressed his appreciation to the Betong Division New Mosque Construction Committee for their dedication and initiative. He also called for careful monitoring of the construction process to ensure smooth progress in accordance with the planned timeline.

“The ample space around the mosque provides room for future development, ensuring that the facilities benefit the community long-term. I am confident this project will serve as a symbol of friendship, unity, and shared values among Muslims in Betong,” he concluded.
