Brunei Ministry Worker Dies, Colleague Injured in Limbang Crash

LIMBANG: A tragic road accident claimed the life of a female employee from the Brunei Ministry of Home Affairs (Kementerian Dalam Negeri, KDN) while her colleague was left injured after their car lost control and crashed into a metal guardrail at Kilometer 9, Jalan Pandaruan, this afternoon.

Limbang District Police Chief, Superintendent Parum Niot, confirmed that the 26-year-old woman died at the scene due to severe injuries to her chest and face. Her colleague, a 22-year-old male driver, suffered a broken left arm and was immediately taken to Limbang Hospital for further treatment.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the accident occurred around 12.30 pm when the victims were travelling from Limbang towards Temburong, Brunei. The driver stated he tried to avoid a trailer lorry that was coming from the opposite direction, but lost control and crashed into the roadside barrier,” he said in a statement.

The impact was severe, causing the metal guardrail to pierce through the windshield and strike the front-seat passenger, leading to fatal injuries.

Superintendent Parum added that police are continuing their investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash. The case is being classified under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

Meanwhile, Limbang Zone Seven Fire Chief, Ramlan Marajan, said his team from the Limbang Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) received an emergency call from the District Police Headquarters at 1.10 pm and immediately rushed to the scene, which is about 12 kilometres from the station.

“Upon arrival, our personnel found the car impaled by the metal barrier. Firefighters used cutting tools to remove the guardrail and free the vehicle,” he said.

The remains of the victim were handed over to police for further action before being sent to Limbang Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

The tragic accident has shocked the local community and serves as a grim reminder of the importance of safe driving, especially along winding and narrow routes like Jalan Pandaruan.
