Bukit Assek Redevelopment Plan Gains Full Approval

SIBU – The long-awaited Bukit Assek Redevelopment Plan has cleared all three major stages of approval by the State Planning Authority (SPA), paving the way for its official launch by the Sarawak Premier.

Bukit Assek State Assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek confirmed that the comprehensive plan, designed to deliver high-impact changes, will soon move into the implementation phase. He explained that the project had been carefully structured to address both environmental and urban development needs.

Stage One of the plan involves a Flood Risk Assessment covering approximately 39,000 acres, aimed at reducing the vulnerability of Sibu to seasonal flooding. Stage Two introduces the Cloudburst Concept Master Plan alongside the design blueprint for Sibu Town, covering 6,700 acres.

The third and final stage, approved in October last year, is the Integrated Infrastructure and Urban Development Concept Master Plan for Bukit Assek, spanning 815.45 acres. “With this approval, we are ready to enter the implementation phase,” Chieng said at the Chinese New Year Open House organised by the SUPP Bukit Assek Branch.

He noted that the master plan was prepared by an international consulting firm and had undergone technical reviews and discussions with the Sarawak Premier. A public exhibition will be held following the official announcement to provide residents with detailed insights into the scope and execution of the redevelopment.

The redevelopment plan is expected to transform Bukit Assek into a modern, resilient, and sustainable urban area. By integrating flood mitigation strategies with infrastructure upgrades, the project aims to safeguard communities while enhancing the town’s liveability.

Community leaders welcomed the approval, highlighting the importance of transparent communication with residents as the project moves forward. The exhibition will serve as a platform for public engagement, ensuring that local voices are heard in shaping the future of Bukit Assek.

The event was attended by SUPP Bukit Assek Branch Chairman Dato Chieng Buong Toon, SUPP Dudong Branch Chairman Wong Ching Yong, and Sibu Chinese Association (UCA) President Ngieng Hock Teck, reflecting strong community support for the redevelopment initiative.

With the SPA’s approval secured, Bukit Assek is poised to undergo one of the most significant urban transformations in Sibu’s history, balancing infrastructure development with environmental resilience.
