SARIKEI – A bush fire spanning half a hectare erupted near the Kampung Seberang Bridge, Sarikei yesterday evening, prompting swift action from the Sarikei Fire and Rescue Department (BBP).
According to BBP Sarikei chief, Arrahman Chik, they received an emergency call at 4.21 pm, reporting the fire outbreak. Responding immediately, a team of firefighters led by Senior Fire Officer (PBK) I Kilok Lampas was dispatched to the scene.
“Upon arrival, the team found that a bush area of approximately half a hectare was ablaze,” he said in a statement to the media.
The operations commander quickly assessed the situation and instructed his team to begin the extinguishing process using three fire beaters, a method suitable for controlling grass and bush fires effectively without water.
Thanks to the prompt and coordinated effort, the fire was successfully brought under control by 5.00 pm and fully extinguished by 5.25 pm, preventing it from spreading to nearby areas or endangering residents.
No casualties or property damage were reported.
This incident highlights the increasing frequency of open bush fires during dry weather in rural areas, especially near human settlements. Authorities are urging the public to remain cautious and avoid open burning or carelessly disposing of cigarette butts, especially during the current hot and dry spell affecting various regions in Sarawak.
The Sarikei BBP once again proved its readiness and efficiency in managing fire emergencies swiftly, ensuring community safety remains a top priority.
