SIMUNJAN – Cahya Mata Sarawak successfully organised its Tree Planting Programme Series 1/2026 at the Sabal Forest Reserve on 18 April, marking another step in the state’s ongoing efforts to strengthen environmental sustainability.
The initiative saw the planting of 3,000 high-value native saplings, including species such as kerukup, engkabang, kapur meranti and keruing.
These trees are recognised for their ecological and economic importance, contributing to biodiversity conservation while supporting long-term forest restoration.
Approximately 280 participants took part in the programme, representing a wide range of institutions and organisations.
Among them were Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, Universiti Teknologi MARA, Institut Pendidikan Guru Kampus Tun Abdul Razak, the Simunjan District Police Headquarters, the Malaysian Armed Forces, and members of the local community.
Their involvement highlighted the collaborative spirit underpinning Sarawak’s environmental initiatives.
Cahya Mata’s Chief Human Resources Officer, Mohd Farid Shah Bin Mohd Basir, was present to oversee the programme, while the Sarawak Forest Department was represented by Mr Mostafa Kamal, a senior officer from the Restoration and Industrial Forest Division.
Both emphasised the importance of partnerships in ensuring the success of conservation projects.
The Sabal Forest Reserve, located in Simunjan, has long been a focal point for reforestation and biodiversity protection.
Programmes such as this are designed to restore degraded areas, enhance carbon sequestration, and safeguard habitats for wildlife.
Environmental experts note that planting native species is crucial for maintaining ecological balance and ensuring resilience against climate change.
Participants were also reminded of the broader socio-economic benefits of forest conservation. Healthy forests contribute to water regulation, soil fertility, and sustainable livelihoods for rural communities.
By engaging universities, government agencies and local residents, the programme reinforced the message that environmental stewardship is a shared responsibility.
The Tree Planting Programme Series 1/2026 reflects Cahya Mata Sarawak’s commitment to corporate social responsibility and sustainable development.
It also aligns with Sarawak’s wider agenda to promote green growth and environmental awareness across the state.
Organisers expressed optimism that the saplings planted will thrive and contribute to the long-term health of the forest reserve.
The event served as a reminder that collective action, even at the community level, can make a significant impact on the environment and future generations.
