KUCHING (Jan 9): Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen has called for immediate action to address the delays in issuing trade plate licenses by the Kuching Road Transport Department (JPJ), which is causing significant disruptions to car dealers and importers in Sarawak. These delays, which stem from inefficiencies and bureaucratic obstacles, are preventing car dealers from transporting unregistered vehicles from ports to workshops, showrooms, or storage facilities.
Chong highlighted a recent news report from The Borneo Post and emphasized the importance of speeding up the process of issuing trade plate licenses, especially since these are crucial for moving cars. He also mentioned that over a thousand vehicles are currently being held at Kuching Port due to the delays.
In his statement, Chong revealed that he has already contacted the Minister of Transport, Anthony Loke, to bring attention to the issue. Loke has since directed the Chief Secretary of the Ministry to take swift action to resolve the matter.
“Without these trade plates, car dealers and forwarding companies cannot move the cars from the port to their designated locations. It is a serious issue,” said Chong.
The MP expressed concern that such inefficiencies undermine the efforts of the Madani Government to reform and enhance the efficiency of government services. “While the Madani Government is doing its best to improve the system, some parts of the civil service are hindering progress, causing unnecessary hardships for the people,” Chong added.
Despite the challenges, Chong praised Minister Loke for his proactive approach to resolving the issue. “We are lucky to have a Minister who is hands-on and quick to act when faced with bureaucratic problems,” Chong said. He is hopeful that the issue will be resolved within the next couple of days and urged affected car dealers and forwarding companies to contact him for further assistance in addressing the problem.
